Steps to keep a usable record
1. Read the expense terms
Identify the categories, share, notice requirements and deadlines in your order. Ask an attorney if those terms are unclear.
2. Log the payment
Record date, child or purpose, provider, total paid and receipt. Separate the full expense from the amount you requested.
3. Preserve the request
Save the dated reimbursement request and any response. Record partial payments with their dates.
4. Reconcile the balance
Requested share minus documented reimbursements gives your tracking balance. A tracking balance is not a court determination of debt.
Worked example
Sample only: a $120 appointment receipt is Exhibit 2. The example assumes a documented request for $60, with $20 received on October 9. The ledger shows a $40 tracking balance. The 50% share is an example, not a rule for your case.
Official sources and local rules
State court self-help information is a starting point. These California resources illustrate court preparation, not nationwide rules. Find your own state and local court’s instructions; custody matters generally use state courts, and filing, service and evidence requirements vary.
How to do this in Custody Ninja
Add expenses and reimbursement status in Expenses. Keep the receipt in Papers and use its exhibit number in your notes so your attorney can follow the amounts.

Questions parents ask
Does every child-related expense qualify?
Not necessarily. Your order and applicable law control what is reimbursable. Record the facts without assuming all costs qualify.
How do I show a partial payment?
Record its amount and date, then subtract it from the requested share. Keep evidence of both the original payment and reimbursement.
