Situations
They did not pay their half. Keep the ledger.
Medical copays, braces, school fees, and uniforms add up quietly. Months later nobody can reconstruct the amounts from memory or a bank app.
Record each cost when you pay it, with the receipt and the date you asked for reimbursement. The unpaid total is then a number, not an argument.
What to log for each cost
- Date paid
- The day the money left your account.
- Amount
- What you actually paid, not the billed amount.
- What it was for
- Copay, prescription, school fee, activity, supplies.
- Receipt
- Photo or PDF, numbered as an exhibit.
- When you asked
- The date and how you asked: text, email, in person.
- Reimbursed
- Yes, partly with the amount, or not at all.
In the appExpenses → Add expense → mark it unreimbursed. The running total updates.
Scout is free. The other parent never gets a login.
Questions parents ask
What if I do not have the receipt anymore?
Log the cost with the date and amount you are sure of and leave the receipt blank. Never estimate a figure into a record.
Does a running total help my attorney?
It saves them the arithmetic. A dated ledger with a net unpaid figure is far quicker to review than a folder of receipts.
